The UEFA European Football Championship, better known as the Euros, is one of the biggest soccer tournaments in the world and is the second-most watched of its kind after the FIFA World Cup. The first Euros tournament was held in 1958 and it has been one of the highlights of the sporting calendar every year since.
What are the Euros?
The Euros are a soccer, or football, tournament held in Europe between different countries, each with their own national teams. Since 2016, there are 24 teams that take part for a total of 51 games.
The Euros are held in a simple group stage format:
- At the start, the 24 teams are randomly assigned places in six groups, each of these groups made up of four nations.
- The group stages are then held, where each team will play against the other three nations in its group.
- The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout rounds, along with the next four best-placed teams. The knockout rounds can have extra time and penalties.
- Then the official bracket starts with the Round of 16, where teams will challenge those outside of their initial groups.
- The Quarter-Finals will be held.
- The Semi-Finals will be held.
- The Final will be held.
When are the Euros?
- The Group Stages are already underway, but the main bracket is yet to start. The remaining Group Stage matches will continue until June 26 and will be either 9am, midday or 3pm ET.
- The Round of 16 will start on June 29, with games on June 30, July 1 and July 2, with games midday or 3pm ET.
- The Quarter-Finals will run from July 5 - 6, with games held both midday and 3pm ET.
- The Semi-Finals will run from July 10 - 11, 3pm ET.
- The Final will be on July 14 at 3pm ET.

Terms to know if you’re betting on the Euros from the US
The UEFA Euro Football Championship is a game of soccer, which means that there are going to be plenty of corners, offsides, penalties and overtime. If you’re not used to betting on European football though, you might not be sure what these mean.
Corners: An opposing player will kick the ball back into play from the corner of the field, usually towards the goal. This happens when a player from the defending team knocks the ball over the goal line without scoring (such as over the goal or beside it). It’s likely that a goal will be scored from a corner.
Offside: An offside occurs when a player kicks the ball to a teammate who is closer to the goal than two defending players. So, you can’t have a teammate camp the goal behind all defending members of the team and boot it over towards them! There need to be two defenders between them and the goal if you want to pass it to them.
Extra Time: If the game finishes in a tie, then it will go into extra time. This means there will be 30 minutes of extra play, split into two 15-minute halves.
Penalties: Rather than a punishment, penalties are a goal shoot-out at the end of a match if the game remains tied after extra time. It will usually start as a best of three, with each team taking a chance to score a kick from a point within the goal area. Each time will take turns until there’s a winner. There have been some dramatic penalties taken over the years in the Euros, from games requiring nine penalties just to decide the winner to the tense Italy vs England final in 2021.
