The International Olympic Committee (IOC) have set up a new system thatÂ'll be in place in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver to monitor athletes and officials to combat illegal betting.

After the 2004 Olympics saw a massive rise in the number of people places bets on the games from around the world it has been seen as important to bring in the new system to make sure all bets are legal and would not affect the outcome of any of the sports.

The Olympics is set to come to London in 2012 but first must stop off for the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver where the system will first be used. A Swiss company, International Sports Monitoring has been giving the task of monitoring the games. Nearly 450 bookmakers will submit betting patterns to the agency who will flag any irregularities and investigate them.

The last Olympics in Beijing adopted the same system used by FIFA which saw that generally small bets were placed during the games but with gambling being played by many more players each day it was seen necessary to have a brand new system.

Corrupt betting it sport has been of great concern recently with UEFA currently investigating 40 matches in the Champions League and UEFA Cup – mainly involving eastern European teams.

Some believe that gambling corrupt will have a bigger impact on the sports that illegal doping and that the betting is linked to organised crime.
