Ricky Gray | April 7, 2022
April 7 is Opening Day for Major League Baseball and there are a few games worth watching
Opening Day kicks off the season and there is a slew of games that will entice fans to start the year. High expectations could be met today for teams like the Los Angeles Angeles and New York Yankees.
Others could emerge as key teams to watch, such as the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres. Either way, it should be a good start to the season and we have a few games that you should keep your eye on.
Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs - 11:20 AM PT
The first game of the season will take place between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. Milwaukee finished the 2021 season at the top of the NL Central. Unfortunately for the Brewers, their postseason run ended quickly when they faced the Atlanta Braves who beat them 3-1 in the Division Series.
This game against the Cubs will give fans a chance to see what the Brewers improved on. They struggled last season in terms of batting averages, averaging .233 as a team, ranking 27th in the MLB. The Cubs have made a few improvements as well, signing LHP Drew Smyly in the offseason. Starting pitchers are Corbin Burnes (MIL) and Kyle Hendricks (CHC).
New York Mets at Washington Nationals - 4:05 PM PT
Many are excited to see what the Mets are going to do this season after making a lot of moves in the offseason. Last year was a disappointment for the Mets, finishing 77-85 on the year. We will say that they had a pretty strong on-base percentage at .314 ranking 17th in Major League Baseball.
The Mets are facing the Washington Nationals who finished at the bottom of the division last season. However, the Nationals had one of the best batting averages (.258) and on-base percentages (.337) in baseball. This game could be an entertaining one with a lot of hits. Starting pitchers are expected to be Tylor Megill (NYM) and Patrick Corbin (WSH)
Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels - 6:38 PM PT
The Houston Astros finished at the top of the AL West in 2021 with a record of 95-67. After making their way to the World Series, they found themselves losing to the Atlanta Braves 4-2. After falling short last season, the Astros will look to start fast with a win over the LA Angels. Unfortunately, they'll likely be facing the phenom pitcher Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani is a special talent that lit a fire under Major League Baseball last season. However, his team didn't perform at its best and the Angels didn't even make the postseason. Last season, runs and on-base percentage were a problem for the Angels, we'll see if they got it fixed in the offseason. Starting pitchers are expected to be Framber Valdez (HOU) and Shohei Ohtani (LAA).
