NBA Commissioner Adam Silver noted the growing sports market in the city.
In a clip posted from the Los Angeles Lakers superstar's talk show, "The Shop", LeBron James spoke about how he plans to own an NBA team. Currently, James' net worth is valued at north of $1bn after a recent evaluation by Forbes.
James stated: "I want a team in Vegas. I want the team in Vegas." This hint gives us the potential location for the team James plans on building. Whether through relocation or a brand new franchise, what he has in mind is still in question.
James is already a part-owner of Liverpool FC and the Boston Red Sox. Last season he stated that his "goal is to own an NBA franchise". He added later that it will happen sooner rather than later, James is 37 years old.
Putting together an ownership group is the likely course of action for the Lakers superstar, who is entering his 20th NBA season. The most recent team that was sold in the NBA was the Minnesota Timberwolves, which sold for $1.5bn.
The league would also need to expand to allow for more teams. During the NBA Finals news conference, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said that there are no current plans for expansion.
Silver said: "We are not discussing that at this time. As I said before, at some point, this league invariably will expand, but it's not at this moment that we are discussing it."
He was also asked about target locations for the expansion of the league, Seattle and Las Vegas being a few optimal areas.
In regards to this, Silver stated: "Those are wonderful markets. We were in Seattle. I'm sorry we are no longer there. We have a WNBA team in Seattle in an almost brand-new building that's doing spectacular. And Las Vegas, where we will be at our summer league in July, has shown itself to be a great sports market as well."
Unfortunately for James, it might be a while before he's able to purchase a team of his own in Las Vegas.
