Led by Gerrit Cole, the Yankees earned 50 wins with a victory over the Rays.
Yesterday, the New York Yankees became the first team to notch over 50 wins. They were led by Gerrit Cole who went over seven innings without allowing a single hit. At the moment, the Yankees are the team to beat in MLB.
This win put the Yankees at a season-high-tying 33 games over .500 at 50-17. This matches the 1998 team for the third-best 67-game start in franchise history. The Yankees won the game over the Rays 4-2 last night.
Cole had this to say on his no-hitter night: "I thought I had good stuff. I've never thrown a no-hitter so I can't tell you what no-hit stuff looks like. I've had a few good nights before. Honestly, in this situation, I'm just glad we got the win."
He finished the night with a season-high 12 strikeouts making it his sixth-career game with 12 K's. His slider was credited with the win by Manager Aaron Boone and catcher Jose Trevino.
Boone said: "His slider was special early and then he just got in a rhythm there. He was dominant. I thought his fastball was great, but the slider seemed to be really good tonight. The slider was at a different level. They made him work a little bit so the pitch count was getting up there and I think he was gassed by the end, but I thought he was dominant tonight."
Trevino added: "The way he prepares, the way he comes out, the way he just performs, toes the rubber and gets after it, it's impressive. Ever since I've been here, I've been nothing but impressed with him."
Although the Yankees have grabbed 50 wins already, there's still much more baseball left to be played. They face the Rays again today and the 6-2 Nestor Cortes will get the start for them tonight.
Cortes is another incredible Yankees pitcher, with an ERA of 1.94 over the course of 69.2 innings.
