Cato will also assume the role of Vice President of Basketball Operations for the team.
The Phoenix Suns have made an impressive move, hiring the NBA's Morgan Cato as the Assitant GM and the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the team.
This move made her one of the league's highest-ranking women in the front office. She is also the first woman of color to hold the title of Assitant GM and will report to GM James Jones and work with coach Monty Williams.
In terms of responsibilities, Cato will focus on leadership and strategy in relation to coaching development, player engagement, and front-office personnel operations. Cato spent the last ten years working for the NBA in New York under President of League Operations Byron Spruell.
She helped with the launch of the Basketball Africa League which will inevitably bolster the sport's global talent pipeline.
In a statement, Jones said: "We're excited to welcome Morgan to the Valley and to the Suns organization. With the league office Morgan played a pivotal role on countless initiatives to grow the game and strategically develop for it to be played at its best."
He added: "The addition of her background and knowledge will allow us to elevate our basketball operations in several areas."
The Suns had a strong year this season, posting a record of 64-18. However, they fell flat in the postseason when they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Semifinals.
The good news for Phoenix is that Chris Paul has stated he doesn't plan to retire during the offseason. This means he'll at least stick with the team for another season.
With him, Devin Booker, and Mikal Bridges, the Suns are in good shape to have another strong year. This is especially true with the added leadership from Cato as the Assistant GM and Vice President of Basketball Operations.
