Wayne Rooney to become D.C. United manager

 | July 11, 2022

Terms have already been agreed upon and Rooney will join the club after finalization.

The Athletic was the first to report the news regarding Wayne Rooney as the new D.C. United manager. Once he acquires the necessary work visa, his time with the team will begin.

Rooney replaces Hernan Losada, who was fired in April. In the interim time, Chad Ashton has managed the club, but that hasn’t gone well. Ashton and D.C. United was recently beaten 7-0 by the Philadelphia Union.

At the moment, the club is tied with Chicago for the fewest points in Major League Soccer, with just 17. Rooney spent 15 months with the club from 2018-19.

After leaving DCU, Rooney went to Derby County as a player coach. Eventually, he took over as manager and managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the campaign.

In September of 2021, the English Football League docked Derby 12 points for entering administration. The EFL also deducted an additional nine points from Derby for breaching EFL accounting rules. Rooney resigned following the conclusion of the season.

Rooney’s accolades include being the top goal scorer for Manchester United with 253 goals in all competitions. He holds the same title for the England national team, as well as the most appearances for an outfield player, scoring 53 goals in 120 appearances.

Rooney began his professional football career with Everton, scoring his first goal just before his 17th birthday. As one of the most decorated footballers, Rooney will bring a winning mindset to D.C. United.

He was also part of England that took part in 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups. Rooney was also said to have drawn interest from Premier League clubs but chose DCU.

D.C. United currently ranks second-to-last in Major League Soccer with a 5-2-10 record.
