Shohei Ohtani comments on him being an Angel "right now"

The All-Star may find himself a target of trade talks in the near future.

After a 2-0 loss to the Texas Rangers, Shohei Ohtani faced several questions about his future with the Los Angeles Angels.

With the team 15 games below the .500 mark, it’s not a surprise that the press is beginning to wonder just how long the Angels can keep him around.

He was asked if he still wanted to be with the Angels after the trade deadline next week.

Translating Ohtani’s words is Ippei Mizuhara who said: “Regardless of where I'm playing, I'm going to give it my all and try to win that ballgame in front of me.

“I'm with the Angels right now, and I'm very thankful for what they've done. I love my team and my teammates. Right now I'm an Angel, and that's all I can focus on.”

After turning 28 earlier this month, Shohei is set to become a free agent at the end of 2023. He’s spent all five of his MLB seasons with the Angels, finishing below .500 and missing the playoffs each year.

Ohtani himself has a 9-6 record this season and has repeatedly pitched his team out of bad situations. Unfortunately, the rest of the team hasn’t held up their end of the bargain.

Ohtani leads the majors with nine double-digit strikeout performances.

Frankly, we wouldn’t be shocked if other players on the team come forward asking for trades. Ohtani might not ask but there will likely be several offers for him.

Plenty of teams in better positions are in desperate need of a pitcher. The Angels could add a few key players by letting go of Ohtani.
