Deshaun Watson suspended for six games by the NFL

 | August 1, 2022

The quarterback received the suspension due to violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

In a move that was expected by many, Deshaun Watson has been suspended by the NFL for six games in the upcoming 2022-23 season.

After violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, this suspension is fairly reasonable considering it could’ve been much worse. Watson will not be fined by the NFL, however.

Sue L. Robinson, the disciplinary officer, came to a 15-page conclusion that stated although Watson violated the personal conduct policy, there wasn’t enough evidence to justify an indefinite suspension.

Watson has been accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions in civil lawsuits filed by 25 women.

The Houston Texans have already come to settlement agreements with 30 women involved in Watson’s case.

In late June, Robinson heard arguments from Watson’s attorney, the NFL, and the players’ union. Watson noted that he cooperated with the NFL’s investigation and “answered every question truthfully.”

The Browns traded for Watson in March, sending three first-round draft picks to the Texans. Cleveland went on to give Watson a five-year contract that is worth up to $230m in guaranteed money.

Head Coach Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns stated that Jacoby Brissett would get the start if Watson were suspended. Brissett is a capable quarterback that should be able to manage the team in Watson’s absence.

Through the start of camp, Watson took the majority of the snaps with the first-team offense, but Stefanski indicated the Browns "may adjust" their plan after Robinson's ruling.

Watson will be allowed to return to the Browns to practice in Week 4.
