Two NL West teams face off to begin a three-game series.

There aren’t very many MLB games to be played today but one really stuck out to us. The San Francisco Giants face off against the San Diego Padres tonight.

These NL West teams are third and second (respectively) in the division. Although they’re both far behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, the second-place position is up for grabs.

Before we get into the details of the game, let’s talk about how these teams have performed recently. The Giants are coming off of a 2-0 series win over the Oakland Athletics. However, they were swept by the Dodgers in a four-game series prior to that.

After being dismantled by the Dodgers the Giants were able to bounce back. The Padres also recently suffered three straight losses to the Dodgers and lost to the Colorado Rockies before that.

Getting the start for the Giants on the mound tonight is Alex Wood who has a 7-9 record. Wood’s ERA is 4.42 through this season after pitching 106 innings and throwing 105 strikeouts.

Wood’s ERA isn’t great considering the batting group he’s going against. The Padres have a batting average of .240 this season and have heavy hitters, Manny Machado and Juan Soto.

On the mound for the Padres tonight is Blake Snell, who has a 4-5 record this season. His ERA is 4.16 this season but has thrown 87 strikeouts over the course of 67 innings.

San Francisco’s batting group hasn’t been too impressive this season, batting .234 this season. Considering San Francisco’s poor performances at the plate, the Padres are a much better pick here.
