The Thunder's promising rookie will miss the entire year after suffering a foot injury.
Unfortunate news out of Oklahoma City Thunder camp as rookie Chet Holmgren will miss the entire 2022-23 season after suffering a foot injury.
Holmgren sustained the injury early in the CrawsOver Pro-Am event while defending LeBron James on a fast break.
Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said: “Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season.
“We know Chet has a long career ahead of him within our organization and the Oklahoma City community. One of the things that most impressed us during the process of selecting Chet was his determination and focus.
“We expect that same tenacity will carry him through this period of time as we work together and support him during his rehabilitation.”
The team consulted with three of the nation's top foot specialists and has decided that Holmgren will have surgery on the ruptured tendon in his foot.
Prestin continued: “He's going to get better just by getting stronger, just by seeing things differently, just by learning the NBA.
“All that's going to be happening. He's going to be able to shoot. He's going to be able to do a lot of things with the ball.”
Holmgren’s size was a topic of conversation when he was drafted. Critics questioned whether his 7-foot-1, 195-pound frame could withstand the physicality of NBA basketball.
The NBA also considers the pro-am event that Holmgren was injured in to be a sanctioned event. This means that his future earnings won’t be in jeopardy.
Holmgren averaged 14.0 points and 8.4 rebounds in five games earlier this year at the Las Vegas summer league.
