Cleveland Cavaliers trade with Utah Jazz for Donovan Mitchell

The Cavaliers are sending several players and picks to Utah for Mitchell.
The Cavaliers are sending the Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, rookie wing Ochai Agbaji, guard Collin Sexton, three unprotected first-round picks (2025, 2027 and 2029), and two pick swaps (2026 and 2028) for Mitchell.
This was a huge trade for the Cavaliers, pairing Mitchell with Evan Mobley and Darius Garland. Now, with their own big three, Cleveland is hoping to pursue a championship.
Sexton has agreed on a four-year, $72m sign-and-trade deal to join the Jazz.
Utah plans to trade other veterans, including Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson and Mike Conley, in an effort to reshape its roster.
Mitchell was pursued by several teams but none offered more than the Cavaliers. With this trade, Cleveland clearly believes that they’re an Eastern Conference contender.
The 25-year-old Mitchell has averaged 23.9 points and 4.5 assists per game during his five-year career with the Jazz, he’s also been an All-Star each of the past three seasons.
The decision to move on from Mitchell made by the Jazz is a no-brainer. They lost center Rudy Gobert earlier in the offseason and also lost their head coach.
At this point, the Jazz are looking to revamp their team, trading away veterans for younger players or picks. With the trade, they have a ton of draft capital over the next few year.
They can choose to use this capital to trade for better players or use them to rebuild their roster.
Either way, this was an intelligent trade by each of the teams involved, especially the Cleveland Cavaliers.
