Baker Mayfield comments on the upcoming game against Cleveland

After a messy departure from the team, Mayfield doesn't have revenge on his mind.

Baker Mayfield of the Carolina Panthers used to be the franchise quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. However, that relationship quickly deteriorated and the Browns handled it poorly.

In Week 1 of the NFL, the Panthers will face the Cleveland Browns first, giving Mayfield a chance for a little bit of revenge. However, Mayfield might not be looking for revenge.

On Wednesday, Mayfield said: “It's a great storyline. Obviously, there's history leading up to this week. [But] there are other games in the NFL that guys are playing (against) their former team.

“It's just the excitement of leading up to Week 1 that is building that anticipation up. It's the familiarity.”

Mayfield was traded to Carolina in July, three months after Cleveland acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans setting a blockbuster record for a quarterback.

Mayfield continued: “I'm grateful for the time I had in Cleveland. I started my career there. The fans there, it's a football town. As I mentioned multiple times it ended abruptly and unexpectedly, but we're here now.

“Everything happens for a reason. I'm rolling with the punches. I'm happy to be a Panther.”

Mayfield quickly rose through the ranks to become the Panthers starting quarterback. There was competition for some time between him and Sam Darnold but he won the job.

Darnold went on to get injured during the final week of the preseason.

Wide receiver Rashard Higgins added: “There's no hate towards Cleveland. We were both happy there. It came down to what it came down to. We're in this position now to help the Panthers win, and that's the only goal moving forward.”

Higgins played for the Cleveland Browns through four seasons but is now in Carolina with Mayfield.
