The gameplay in Split Happens is simple, you press spin and the reels spin. There aren’t any Sticky symbols or anything too technical at this point. There are 10 paylines, which is standard for a 5x3 reel set-up.
Wilds: The Wilds in Split Happens are the bowling pin symbols and can land anywhere on the reels. If all three land on one reel, then the pin will turn into an Expanding Wild to cover the entire reel, then ‘walk’ off the screen. The Walking Wilds mean that the Wilds will roll one reel to the side each spin, until it falls off the screen.
Split Wilds: If an Expanding Wild lands in the middle, orange reel, then this will trigger one of the core mechanics of Split Happens. As the name might suggest, the bowling pin will get zapped and split into two then roll to each side, becoming a full-reel Wild on the second and fourth reels. Finally, the pins will roll onto the first and fifth reels before rolling off the table completely.

It would’ve been nice to see Thunderkick commit to the bowling alley vibes a bit more. Rather than the Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 symbols, the studio could’ve chosen more bowling alley symbols - like the shoes, a coke float or maybe a disco ball! It would’ve also been a great opportunity to include those iconic bowling alley video screens after you finish the free spins bonus round - you know the ones, the crazy animated videos that make no sense.
However, as Thunderkick are still a reasonably small studio, this release is still a great success for the business. The Walking Wilds are fun and they’re well integrated into the theme of the bowling alley too.
