Mental 2 slot review: What to expect, features and gameplay Slot Review

mentalcover
The long-awaited sequel is here... but is it as Mental as we'd all hoped?

When Mental was initially released by Nolimit City in 2021, it immediately became one of the most popular slots in the US and for good reason, too. It wasn’t the gold-toned, palm-tree-loving slots of the past - it was something new and gritty.

So when Mental 2 was released on March 25 this year, players all around the world had high hopes that this would be one of the best slots of 2025. It had big boots to fill following the first game, sure, but the team also had a lot of content to work with to make a hit game.

Mental 2 slot overview

Mental 2 isn’t a charismatic slot, at least, not in the ways you’d expect. You’re not here to play in the sun or make friends with fluffy bunnies on the farm. Perhaps it’s best that we let Nolimit City explain this one, actually: “Mental defined, is a person or their behaviour, is extreme or illogical in some way. Put them together and you’ve got murderous, deranged daughter who butchered her parents. She gets shipped off the asylum where someone very special is waiting for her!” … We love a cheery slot right in time for spring.

The symbols in Mental 2 are gory and represent the horror theme well. Just like the first game, most of the symbols are various body pieces, such as Skulls, Ribcages and Spinal Cords. The highest-paying symbols are once again the patient, although this time it’s the portraits of the young girl. None of these pay out particularly high amounts in the base game though, which means you’ll be relying on the features for those big hits.

Speaking of features, Mental 2 has a lot of them. There are free spins, scatters and even a God Mode, but we’ll explain all of the Mental 2 features and how to play them later on in this guide.

Who made the Mental 2 slot game?

The Mental 2 slot game was made by NoLimit City. This team has gained a following in the industry for creating modern and edgy slot games that really push the limits (if you will) when it comes to the themes they use.

Nolimit City was founded in 2013 and launched its first game, Oktoberfest, three years later. The studio is devoted to releasing slots with new features, themes or gameplay styles. We have a guide on another popular Nolimit City slot, xWays Hoarder 2, available here.

In June 2024, Nolimit City launched in the US alongside another industry giant, Evolution. The first Nolimit City slot available in the US was Buffalo Hunter, with the rest of the studio’s slot games releasing over time. If you want to try out Mental 2, or any of the other Nolimit City titles, then there are plenty of popular US online casinos which offer them, including Borgata and BetMGM.

Mental 2 slot features

There are a lot of features in Mental 2, and when we say a lot, we mean a LOT. Take your time to sit down and read through each feature to understand how these will affect the gameplay and your experience. This is a very high-volatility slot, so it’s best to know what you’re getting yourself into before you jump in. If you’re more of a hands-on learner, then it’s easy to find a Mental 2 slot demo to try some of these out before you wager real money on them.

Fire Frames and Reels: Accidents can happen in places like this, and much like a real fire, if one of the symbols or reels catch on fire, then it’ll spread. This can happen at random and will cause the symbol or reel to split into two or three parts, respectively. This can contribute to extra winning combinations across the reels.

Enhancer Cells: When you get the Fire Frames feature, you also get a chance of that spreading and unlocking the Enhancer Cells along the bottom of the reels. Four Fire Frames will activate one Enhancer Cell, six Fire Frames will unlock two Enhancer Cells and eight Fire Frames will trigger three. The Enhancer Cells will the rveal either a Wild Symbol, an xSplit symbol that splits in two, an xNudge Wild symbol that can apply multipliers, a Patient Symbol or an xWays symbol that reveals three matching symbols.

xHole: If an xHole symbol lands on a Fire Frame, then the symbols will be sucked into it, then spat back out with mulipliers applied to them. Don’t worry though, as any winning symbols will go back to the same position.

xMental: When an xMental symbol lands on a Fire Frame, you’ll get a free spin where all reels will have at least one Fire Frame, Enhancer Cells activated and a higher chance of landing an xHole symbol too.

Dead Patients: Landing two or more Dead Patient symbols will activate a multiplier for either 5x, 10x, 15x, 30x, 50x, 100x, 200x, 500x, 1,000x or 9,999x your bet.

Mental Transform: Landing a Disembodied Scatter symbol during the base game will cause it to transform into an xWays, xSplit, Dead Patient, Wild or Patient symbol.

If you don’t want to wait for these symbols, then Mental 2 supports various levels of Buy Bonus features:

xBet Nolimit Booster: For 1.4x your base bet, you’re guaranteed to land a Scatter symbol on the first reel.

Fire Frames Nolimit Booster: For 6x your base bet, you’re guaranteed Fire Frames on all reel positions.

xHole Nolimit Booster: For 99x your base bet, you’re guaranteed to land an xHole symbol.

xMental Nolimit Booster: For 3,200x your base bet, you’re guaranteed to activate xMental.

God Mode: For 6,666x your base bet, you can land the xGod symbol which gives you a chance to win the 99,999x maximum payout, known as Death is Just the Beginning.

However, many fans have been quick to point out that they’re not too impressed with these features. The game runs at a very high volatility, which means that it can be difficult to land features without paying for some help in the form of guaranteed symbols.

As so much of the gameplay revolves around activating Fire Frames, many fans have expressed that it can feel almost pointless to play without paying for the Fire Frames Nolimit Booster, but with this set at 6x the bet and the minimum bet being $0.20, this sets the feature at a $1.20 minimum spin.

Many of Nolimit City’s fans are calling for the provider to lower the minimum bet to something more affordable, such as $0.05, seeing as the game seems to lean towards the Buy Bonus features so heavily.

However, it’s unclear whether Nolimit City will adjust the minimum betting limits to make the full range of features more accessible to lower spenders.

Does the Mental 2 slot game offer free spins?

There are three free spin features offered by this online slot. Luckily, the gameplay doesn’t change too much between them, so you don’t need to learn three different sets of mini-games.

Bloodletting Spins: If you land three Scatter symbols, then you’ll trigger the Bloodletting Spins feature. During these free spins, the online slot will make any Fire Frames and Reels sticky throughout the bonus.

Surgery Spins: If you land three Scatter symbols and one Disembodied Scatter symbol, you’ll get nine surgery spins. The Patient symbols will have multipliers attached to them, which can then be transferred between different portraits, although it will decrease the multiplier by 1x each time it transfers.

ExperiMENTAL Spins: If you land three Scatter symbols and two Disembodied Scatter symbols, you’ll get ten ExperiMENTAL Spins. In this feature, the Disembodied Scatters become sticky and trigger a Mental Transform each spin. The Multiplier also does not decrease each time it transfers in this mode.

With how jam-packed Mental 2 is with other features, it does cram a lot in with these three free spin iterations too. While it would be easy to say that they feel a bit too similar with one another, it would also be far too much to have completely different free spin features alongside everything else.

Mental 2 slot conclusion

Mental 2 won’t be for everyone, and that’s okay. Nolimit City set out to create an intense game, and they succeeded in that. From the grim visuals, to the overwhelming features and even the spooky soundtrack - this experience isn’t for the faint hearted. We don’t mean that in the traditional way, either. There is simply a lot going on here.

While Mental 2 has been a long-awaited sequel to the original, it’s rubbed some players up the wrong way. The game relies on players using some of the Buy Bonus features, but with a minimum bet of $0.20, this doesn’t leave a lot of scope for lower-staked players to enjoy the game as is intended.

If the game wants to structure most of its features around Fire Frames being active on the reels, then it makes sense that these would trigger often without the need for the Buy Bonus. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case, which has left many players feeling a little deflated.

Things may smoothen out for Mental 2 as time goes on, but it certainly hasn’t been received on launch as well as it had hoped.
