It may have been a poker zone where no right minded amateur would have set foot but that didnÂ't stop ex-footballer Teddy Sheringham anteing up the £10,000 entry fee and having a crack at the pros at the WSOPE. The World Series of Poker Europe is one of the most prestigious poker tournaments in the world and recently took place in LondonÂ's Leicester Square. The footy legend may have been playing for a few years but the level of competition at the WSOPE was another league entirely. The premiership star may have ruled the roost on the football pitch but he definitely entered this tournament as of a non-league punter. That didnÂ't seem to faze Sheringham though as he went on to finish 14th out of a 300 strong field. The £40,000 he won probably wonÂ't change his life but the honour of competing and outlasting some of the biggest and best names in the poker world is a huge achievement. At the time of writing Sheringham is going strong in another highstakes tournament in London so it seems it wasnÂ't just beginnerÂ's luck. Maybe the poker world has found a new star.
On the flipside, poker star Daniel Negreanu has decided to step out of his comfort zone, away from the felt and onto the football pitch. The poker icon has been challenged to a penalty shootout by Liverpool goalkeeper, Jose Reina. Reina has bet the Canadian poker star that he wonÂ't score a single penalty against him in 5 attempts. Never one to turn down a side bet, Negreanu gladly accepted the £12,000 bet and will no doubt be seeking the advice of some of the best penalty takers in the business.
