New JerseyÂ's recent legalisation of internet gambling is causing increasing concern amongst some tribes in California and beyond, according to the newspaper, The Press of Atlantic City. One of the fundamental issues around the embryonic online gaming industry in the USA is how to effectively include the tribes in the process, as well as keeping commercial firms happy with proceedings at the same time.

In fact this was one of the main reasons why a federal bill never came into fruition – although individual States are making their own mind up on the subject. Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey have all legalised online gambling to some extent. In California, it is still not legal but pro-gambling lobbies are still trying to change this, along with prevailing attitudes.

Before the recent New Jersey legalization, Robert Smith, chairman of the California Tribal Business Alliance reportedly said: Â"Online gaming is a slippery slope, and putting at risk a multimillion-dollar industry, the associated jobs and the revenue interests to impacted states, without safeguards, is a gamble no one should be willing to take.Â"
