The real deal: Previewing the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs 2024

After an entertaining Play-In Tournament, the National Basketball Association's playoffs are here. Here's a look at the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat

The Boston Celtics have been the best team in the NBA all season, so it’s no surprise to see them land the No. 1 seed in the East. With an absolutely stacked roster of Jasyon Tatum, Kristap Porzingis, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Al Horford and more, they should annihilate the Heat, who had to play their way into the playoffs.

Really, that should be the end of our preview there. Yet, it’s Miami we’re talking about and Jimmy Butler, who always seems to find another gear come playoff time. The Celtics are the class of the NBA this year – the championship is theirs to lose – but the Heat are as gritty as they come.

Expect a much more entertaining series than you should get with a 1 v 8 pairing.

New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers

It’s still strange to see the Knicks not only in the playoffs, but as a high seed. Still, that’s the reality we’re looking at – and what’s more, in their first matchup of the series this past week, Brunson was carried by his teammates over the 76ers and their reigning MVP Joel Embiid.

It’s hard to know what to think about this one. The 76ers have one of the best players in the NBA and some serious prospects coming on around Embiid – but they’re the lower seed and have been playing inconsistently all year.

The Knicks, on the other hand, aren’t wowing anyone with their roster, but they’re the No. 2 seed and have already notched one win in this series. What’s more, it’s a little hard to believe the Knicks – the Knicks?! – will advance in the playoffs after all their years of mediocrity.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Indiana Pacers

Now, this is probably your tightest matchup of the first round. The Bucks are a championship team led by an all-time great in Giannis Antetokounmpo who is paired this season with one of the coldest sharpshooters in NBA history, Damian Lillard.

The Pacers? Can you even name a player on this Indiana team? Maybe if you tried, you could come up with Tyrese Haliburton, Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner, but you'd have to work at it. Did you know Doug McDermott or Obi Toppin was on the Pacers these days? (I had to look that up.)

Here’s the deal, the Bucks have struggled against the Pacers while healthy and, right now, they’re not healthy – with the Greek Freak possibly missing multiple games to start the series.

The Bucks should win this and move on to round two, but they have been known to underachieve.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Orlando Magic

Unless you’re a fan of either of these teams, I can’t imagine there’s many people who will care about this series. Yes, Donovan Mitchell has been playing well for the Cavs, but I don’t think anyone expects either of these squads to make any noise in the playoffs

Raise your hand if you even knew one or both of these teams were even in the playoffs? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Cleveland and Orlando hardly get any publicity or hype – and there’s a good reason for that. They’re pretty boring squads that will be footnotes after the season is over

If you’re going to bet on this one, though, go with the Cavs. They at least have a star in Mitchell.
